During 2020 the school did the heritage dinner, an event to celebrate the diversity community, online. But in 2021 school year we realized that we needed something that was more tied into the community and made sure everyone could be involved. Thus the monthly heritage spotlight was created and a new way to celebrate heritage was born.
The monthly heritage spotlight usually consisted of three things: a meal from that cultural group or heritage, an activity, and a couple of resources (like a video, or a way to explore further).
A final (if flexible list) was created during November. This list included:
January – Jewish American
February – African American History Month
March – Greek/Irish
April – Arab
May – Asian Pacific Islander Month
June – Caribbean
July – South Asian
November – Native American Heritage Month
December – holiday breakfast, no specific heritage
During November we talked to the local Native American group, the Ganondagan, and decided to do make cornhusk dolls and prepare a three sisters salad for lunch one day in November. In addition we also put up a couple of video links about Native American culture or stories.
Next in December we made a segment of holiday breakfast. This segment was a short video of people speaking about their holiday traditions, everything from hiding a pickle in the Christmas tree, to lighting the menorah, to wearing fuzzy pajamas, or being elves on Christmas eve. This month had no food.
This falls in the third column in the second row, as seen below:
