Starting a Gender Sexuality Alliance in my School

A GSA is a simple concept: create space for LGBT+ students in the school, educate people on the community, and host events to further awareness on the community. I chose to start this club for two reasons: one, I noticed a need for a space for LGBT+ people in the school, and two, I thought it would be a good birches project. So at the beginning of the school year I submitted my proposal and waited for approval.

When I finally got approval I began working on my first event: intersex day of solidarity. Intersex solidarity day takes place on November 8th and marks the birthday of Herculine Barbin, a 19th century french intersex person who later had their memoirs published. Intersex day of solidarity is a day to elevate the stories of intersex people and a day to take action against genital mutilation and end stigma.

To mark the day of intersex solidarity I made an announcement during morning meeting about it with this slide

I later posted this in canvas in upper school announcements:

Hey all, during student announcements today I talked a bit about intersex people. If you’re intersested in learning more on this topic or want to understand the many issues that intersex people face I have included some links below. There is so much more out there about intersex people
